My BF is changing jobs. His current health insurance will expire at the end of this month and the new company’s health insurance doesn’t kick in for 90days. So we have a little over 2 months to fill in the gaps. He doesn’t really care if he has health insurance, but his kid is on LOTS of medicine. With copays it runs close to $500 a month. I don’t even want to know what those will be without any health insurance. Is there some state stuff he can use for those 3 months? Both he and his son are NJ residents if that helps…I don’t have any kids so I’m a little lost on this subject!
He needs to ask his old employer if he is eligible for COBRA coverage. COBRA is a continuation of the same plan he had while working; however, he’ll need to pay the full premium (what he paid and what his employer paid previously). If the old employer had more than 20 employees on the plan he will be eligible. If they had fewer than 20 he may be eligible, depending on the employer and state regulations.
Otherwise, he needs to speak with a local agent that works with all of the major companies in his area. The agent can find the best plan for his situation. There is no charge using an agent.

State Farm has a great short term plan through Assurant. You can choose the exact number of days with whatever type of coverage you would like. I highly suggest it. I live in the Chicagoland area and my agent’s number is 888.323.7070. Hope that helps, good luck!

I need temporary health insurance so I don’t have a lapse in coverage and so they don’t decline treating my pre-existing conditions in the future. I don’t need pharmacy or doctor visit just basic hospital. I am middle aged so won’t qualify for some of the student based policies. Thanks
I could help if you lived in my state but chances are you don’t. Contact a local health insurance broker and ask for "short term medical" plans. Be aware that depending upon your state regulations and depending upon your pre-existing conditions you may have a problem getting a policy.

I have just quit my job and will be starting my new job next week. My health insurance from my old job will end at the end of this month. The health insurance for my new job does not kick in until March 2012 (there is a six month waiting period because I am a part time employee) I was wondering if there was a temporary health insurance I can get because to me six months is a LONG time to wait for coverage and who knows what can happen between now and then……
There’s such a thing as short term health insurance.
You’re PROBABLY best off taking COBRA through the old employer for those six months, if you have anything already wrong, as short term health insurance won’t cover preexisting conditions, and usually doesn’t cover "routine maintenance".
