Do Italian Citizens Get Any Health Care Benefits When OUTSIDE Of Italy?

I am an Italian citizen who has been living in the U.S. for most of my life. Only as a small child did I spend time in Italy, among other many other countries. Don’t worry, though, I’m the U.S. legally icon smile Do Italian citizens get any health care benefits when OUTSIDE of Italy?

I inherited Italian citizenship from my mother, who inherited it from my grandmother. Although my grandmother has been living outside of Italy for a very long time now, she still gets a regular check from the Italian government to help her in her old age.

I also have a Saudi Arabian friend who gets excellent health insurance from his embassy. His girlfriend and I were talking, and she wondered why I couldn’t also get health insurance from my embassy. I know Italy does have a nationalized health care system, but I have never heard of expatriate Italians getting health care benefits when living outside of Italy. While I doubt this is possible, I thought I might as well ask.

So, does the Italian embassy provide expatriate Italians with any health care benefits while they are living in the U.S.?

According to the Italian Embassy in the U.S., the answer is YES:

You will have to contact the consulate that represents the district in the U.S. where you reside. The consulate should have a list of hospitals and doctors that they have contracts with to assist Italian citizens with medical care.

and contact them regarding their healthcare program in the U.S.
